Arguably the king of the Bristol scene, DJ Pinch (a.k.a. Rob Ellis) is a name that everyone into dubstep should know. His list of forthcoming gigs is enough to make anyone who enjoys travel envious and a sure sign of his success and worldwide recognition. Following a string of releases on Tectonic, Tempa, Soul Jazz, and Punch Drunk, "Attack of the Giant Robot Spiders!" marks Pinch's fifth release for the Planet Mu label. The title track shuns the bass scene's ever-present need to go harder and louder. Instead, Pinch reins it in and takes masterful control of the beats, making a track that is progressive, dark, and harrowing. Like Darqwan and Distance, Ellis understands the less-is-more approach, creating an atmosphere of claustrophobia and anxiety within his music. "Attack..." starts off with a lurching beat that pushes its way across the dark background soundscape of soft pads and ambience, finally arriving at the chunky bass drop a good third of the way into the tune. At this point it would be impossible to stop one's head from nodding. The flip also relies on what's not there. On "Teleportation," Ellis creates a great feeling of space between his fast two-step beat before a soft pad lead laps over the top.
