Coconut Coast is the new single from Oriol, Planet Mu's latest signing, whose debut album Night and Day drops in early August. His real name is Oriol Singhji, and he was born in Barcelona but now splits his time between London and Cambridge. With a skill that sets him apart from his peers, Oriol connects the dots between the '70s-era fusions of Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder, the Chicago house of Larry Heard, drum 'n' bass and dubstep. Fusing electronics and synth funk together into something joyful and fresh, he is deeply indebted to older styles but still sounds bang up to date. "Coconut Coast" is the album's energetic taster track--a thrilling example of what's to come. Oriol brings some remixers along for the party, too. FaltyDL takes the tempo down and gives the track a strange, off-key, shuffling rub reminiscent of Theo Parrish at his oddest. Mike Paradinas, in his Jake Slazenger guise, presents a mix of "Memories" that's almost funky house, mixed with big rubbery jazz chords and classy diva vocal samples. Shortstuff takes the same track and draws it into strange new shapes over stiff beats.
