On his debut full-length Night and Day, Barcelona-born, Britain-based producer Oriol Singhji connects the dots between his musical interests. From drum 'n' bass and dubstep to the '70s fusion and experimentation of Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder to the lush house of Theo Parrish, Larry Hearrd and Recloose, the album incorporates a wide variety of influences into a singular style that's exuberant and fresh. Night and Day opens with "Joy FM," mixing Moog melodies with warm early-Detroit techno; "Spiral" follows with diva vocals and rich talk-box harmonies, while "Memories" works up a nervous melody from staccato chords. "Jam" lets things roll out with a loose musicality, irresistible early-'80s soul stylings and big Moog synth. The record's title track captures the ambience of a tropical party at sunrise, bittersweet and beautiful, and is followed by "Fantasy for N" where beatless layers of electronics create a dreamy mood. The tough beats and chords of the album's closer "5 Bars" mix it up with ambient atmosphere. A perfect summer album, Night and Day is an invitation to an off-world utopia, and within time you'll be grinning from ear to ear.
