The Videowave EP is an “end of phase one” release for Kuedo, a.k.a. Jamie Teasdale (formerly of the legendary dubstep duo Vex’d). After two brilliant and well received EPs, Teasdale has a new style in store for his forthcoming album. Videowave collects the best of his remaining early material together with three remixes of tracks from his Dream Sequence EP. “Take Off Remix” was conceived in 2009 as a remix for Slugabed, but it doesn’t have much of the original left in it, so Slugabed kindly let him use it for his own track. It’s a cosmic attack of spiraling, flickering arpeggios and aerial synth lines over crashing half-step drums. Illum Sphere remakes “Starfox” by laying it out with warm orchestral strings and soft bleeps, resulting in an incredibly inviting and gentle version. Warp’s Chris Clark turns “Glow” into a weightless symphony with long spaces, held together with atmospheric drones in complex arrangements. Heterotic bathes “Shutter Light Girl” in washed-out, gently pulsing synths of the kind one might find accompanying the suggestive cut-aways of an ’80s soft porn VHS. Lastly, mini-anthem “Oh” mixes boom bap drums and claps with a lush, upbeat synth melody. The track walks a fine line between melodic and abstract, previewing the forthcoming material, but also signing off on Teasdale’s original hip hop sound and finishing the EP in triumphant form.
